The diplomatic relations between India and Canada encountered some challenges in the past year, triggered by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations regarding India’s suspected involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Despite these tensions, Canada’s High Commissioner to India, Cameron Mackay, emphasized the resilience and alignment of the strategic interests of both nations.

Addressing a seminar on ‘India-Canada Business: The Way Forward’ at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, Mackay highlighted the continued strength of bilateral trade and investment relationships. He expressed encouragement in the face of recent challenges and commended the business community for their commitment to fostering ties between the two nations.

“While acknowledging the recent tensions, it is essential for the governments to conduct diplomacy, but the long-term interests of Canada and India are undeniably aligned,” Mackay stated. He emphasized the significance of business-to-business ties in supporting job creation, technology partnerships, and the overall prosperity of both countries.

Mackay urged governments and business communities on both sides to focus on strengthening business relationships independently of diplomatic issues. “Let the governments handle diplomacy, but let’s continue building business and friendly connections between our nations,” he added.

Despite the political strain, Mackay highlighted the robustness of business relations between the two countries. He noted that over 100 Indian companies have invested in Canada, and more than 600 Canadian companies operate in India. Mackay cited examples of successful collaborations, such as his recent visit to the McCain plant in Gujarat.

Former Indian high commissioner to Pakistan and Canada, Ajay Bisaria, echoed Mackay’s sentiments, characterizing the diplomatic tensions as a temporary phase. He emphasized that both countries’ leaderships are committed to ensuring that political issues do not hinder the ongoing business relationships.
