Altman is set to reclaim his role as Chief Executive Officer, with the reconstituted board now led by Bret Taylor. Accompanying Taylor are esteemed members Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo, a lineup unveiled in the company’s official statement on X.

The announcement reads, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.”

This follows OpenAI’s decision on Monday to appoint Emmett Shear, former Twitch boss, as the interim CEO while Altman, in a surprising move, aligned with Microsoft as a supporter.

As reported by Media, Altman, who faced removal from OpenAI’s board on Friday amid disputes over the pace of artificial intelligence development and monetization, engaged in negotiations with the company for his reinstatement. However, negotiations faced obstacles on Sunday, with disagreements arising, partly due to Altman’s advocacy for the resignation of current board members, as per sources cited by Bloomberg.

Despite the challenges, Altman expressed confidence in his return, citing the support of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In a statement, Altman conveyed, “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. With the new board and with Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
