Canadian poet Rupi Kaur has refused an invitation to a White House Diwali celebration, citing the US government’s response to the Israel-Hamas War as her reason. Kaur, known for her bestselling book “Milk And Honey,” is a prominent figure with over four million Instagram followers. She gained recognition for challenging Instagram’s policies when they removed an image of her sleeping with period stains.

In her social media statement, Kaur expressed her refusal to participate in any event associated with institutions supporting the collective punishment of civilians. The White House’s Diwali event, hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris, is scheduled for November 8. Kaur also accused the US government of justifying a “genocide against Palestinians.”

This decision by Rupi Kaur has garnered support from other South Asian personalities, with some declaring their boycott of the White House Diwali celebration. Actor Richa Moorjani and content creator Payal are among those who’ve chosen to decline the invite, standing in solidarity with Kaur’s principled stance.
