Rampant Flash Mob Theft Plagues Los Angeles Nike Store – Community Calls for Action

Published on

In a shocking incident on November 19, a Nike store in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles fell victim to a brazen flash mob comprising seventeen teenagers. The perpetrators, consisting of four girls and thirteen boys aged between 15 and 20, were captured on camera ransacking the store and making off with an estimated $12,000 (Rs 9.9 lakh) worth of clothing.

This incident marks a disturbing trend in the area, where organized thefts have become a growing concern.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Commercial Crimes Division shared pictures and videos of the audacious robbery, depicting the teenagers hastily grabbing sneakers, tearing clothes off racks, and stuffing their loot into large blue trash bags. Despite onlookers capturing the event on their mobile phones, no one dared to intervene as the thieves, all wearing masks, executed their plan flawlessly.

Authorities revealed that the group swiftly fled the scene in five vehicles—a tan Infiniti four-door, a gray KIA SUV, a white Honda, a KIA four-door, and a black Audi. The LAPD has released footage of the incident in the hopes of identifying the suspects, emphasizing the need for community cooperation.

This incident is not an isolated one, as LAPD officers suspect the same group to be responsible for multiple robberies at the same store. The community is understandably frustrated, with one resident expressing concern about the negative image these incidents cast on their already challenging neighborhood.

“Look. Take a look. We’re finally doing something. They need to just leave us alone. They need to go about their business. Don’t ever come back here. This community is already rough. They’re just making us look bad,” a local resident exclaimed.

This unfortunate event sheds light on the rising tide of petty theft and organized shoplifting in various U.S. states, coinciding with the financial struggles faced by consumers. Los Angeles County currently holds the unenviable position of having the highest commercial robbery rate in the state, as reported by the Public Policy Institute of California.
