As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Sunday, an extraordinary and touching moment unfolded at the Port Moresby airport. PNG Prime Minister James Marape humbly touched PM Modi’s feet, seeking his blessings. This rare gesture showcased the deep respect and admiration that PM Marape holds for PM Modi. The Indian Prime Minister’s visit to the Indo-Pacific country marks his first tour to PNG and the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to this region.

The arrival of PM Modi was accompanied by the playing of the Indian national anthem, signifying the warmth of the bilateral relationship. Both prime ministers stood still, demonstrating their mutual respect. PM Modi was accorded a guard of honor, a fitting tribute to his leadership and the strong ties between India and Papua New Guinea.

It is worth noting that Papua New Guinea generally does not provide a ceremonial welcome to leaders arriving after sunset. However, in a special exception, the nation extended a fully adorned ceremonial welcome to PM Modi, highlighting the significance of his visit. This exceptional gesture underlines the appreciation and admiration that the people of Papua New Guinea have for PM Modi.

To further honor the occasion, a traditional folk dance performance was staged outside the airport, symbolizing the vibrant cultural heritage of Papua New Guinea. The colorful and lively performance added to the joyous atmosphere, creating an unforgettable welcome for PM Modi.

During his visit, PM Modi is set to co-chair the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit) on Monday. This summit will provide a platform for India to strengthen its ties with the Pacific island nations, including Papua New Guinea. PM Modi’s Papua New Guinea counterpart, James Marape, will also be present, further emphasizing the significance and mutual commitment of the two nations to foster cooperation and collaboration.

The warm reception extended to PM Modi in Papua New Guinea reflects the shared values, friendship, and goodwill between India and the Pacific island nation. It signifies the growing importance of bilateral relations and the desire for stronger collaboration in various sectors, including trade, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

As the visit progresses, the world watches with anticipation, hoping to witness the positive outcomes that will arise from this historic meeting between two leaders committed to forging a brighter future.
