Davao de Oro province witnessed a tragic toll, with thirteen reported fatalities and two individuals still unaccounted for. The neighboring Davao del Norte province also faced the brunt of the natural calamity, recording seven casualties.

The calamity unfolded as a result of a convergence of a northeast monsoon and a low-pressure area, unleashing continuous rains across the southern Mindanao region from January 28 to February 2. The relentless downpour led to severe floods and landslides, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Data from the national disaster agency underscores the magnitude of the crisis, indicating that over 812,000 individuals have been adversely affected. In response to the emergency, approximately 85,000 people sought refuge in evacuation centers, highlighting the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

This recent catastrophe follows closely on the heels of another disaster in mid-January when heavy rains triggered floods and landslides, claiming the lives of 18 individuals in southern Philippines. The frequency of such incidents underscores the vulnerability of the Southeast Asian nation to natural disasters, with its archipelago of over 7,600 islands being battered by around 20 tropical storms annually.
