Published on

North Korea has announced the successful launch of its maiden spy satellite, claiming that it has captured images of significant US landmarks, including the White House, Pentagon, and adjacent naval bases. However, there’s been no external verification of the satellite’s functionality, and North Korea is yet to disclose any imagery captured by the satellite.

The regime’s state media reported that leader Kim Jong Un has purportedly reviewed the latest images alongside previously claimed photographs of Rome, Guam’s Anderson Air Force Base, Pearl Harbor, and the US Navy’s Carl Vinson aircraft carrier.

Earlier this year, South Korea salvaged a North Korean spy satellite following a failed launch, determining that its military efficacy was limited. Despite Seoul’s assessment of North Korea’s satellite technology as rudimentary, it’s speculated that such advancements could enhance the regime’s targeting capabilities, potentially aiding in nuclear strike development.

While North Korea initially slated the satellite’s reconnaissance mission to begin on December 1 after calibration, the Korean Central News Agency announced an accelerated fine-tuning process, aiming to conclude earlier than anticipated.

However, the global community awaits confirmation of the satellite’s operational status and awaits the release of any imagery by North Korea. Historically, North Korea’s assertions regarding satellites have been met with skepticism, as seen in past claims under Kim Jong Il’s leadership that were contradicted by external sources, casting doubt on their validity.
