Maldives Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem became the target of a violent assault on January 31 in the capital city of Male. Shockingly, an unidentified assailant ambushed Shameem on his way to work, striking him with a hammer. This disturbing incident occurred against the backdrop of escalating political tensions within the Maldives.
Reports confirm that Shameem sustained a left arm injury during the attack, prompting immediate medical attention at ADK Hospital. Fortunately, authorities have reassured the public of Shameem’s stable condition.
The police, actively investigating the assault, are exploring potential connections between the attack and Shameem’s previous legal actions against criminal elements, according to AFP. Appointed in December 2019, Shameem’s tenure as the chief prosecutor has been marked by significant events. Just three days prior to the assault, Maldivian legislators rejected appointments to three cabinet posts, including the crucial position of the attorney general.
Hussain Shameem’s appointment came during the administration of former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Solih, a vocal critic of the apparent anti-India sentiment in the country led by President Mohamed Muizzu, has consistently opposed such sentiments. In 2023, Solih labeled the Opposition’s ‘India Out’ campaign as a national security risk.
The political landscape of the Maldives had already been marred by unrest in the days leading up to the attack. The Parliament witnessed severe clashes between legislators from the ruling party and the main Opposition over cabinet appointments and the role of the attorney general. Social media circulated various video clips depicting chaotic scenes of physical altercations, resulting in injuries and a temporary halt to parliamentary proceedings.
While the authorities are diligently pursuing leads, no direct link has been established between the assault on Hussain Shameem and the recent political upheavals. The situation remains fluid, and investigations are ongoing to unravel the motives behind this disturbing attack on the Maldives Prosecutor General.
