Rescue efforts are currently underway to locate victims in 18 separate houses, according to the country’s publicity department. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of deaths or injuries. The cause of the landslide remains unknown at this point, although images from the scene suggest the presence of snow on the ground.

This devastating landslide comes just over a month after China experienced its most powerful earthquake in years, which struck the northwest in a remote region between Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

On December 18, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake claimed the lives of at least 149 people, reducing homes to rubble and triggering mudslides that engulfed two villages in Qinghai province.
