Israel Responds to Donald Trump’s ‘Hezbollah’ Remark on Hamas Attack: Strong Condemnation and Backlash

Published on

In a surprising turn of events, former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments have drawn sharp criticism from Israel and various American political figures. The remarks in question involve Trump’s assertion that, had he been in office, the United States would have detected and thwarted the terrorist attack in Israel. Notably, he also praised the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the ongoing conflict. Israel has reacted vehemently to these comments, branding them as “shameful” and “unreliable.”

In his address at a rally in West Palm Beach, Trump pointed fingers at Israeli and US government officials, alleging that their actions had exposed vulnerabilities within Israel, thus provoking Hezbollah’s attack. This assertion is particularly notable as Hezbollah is a well-known adversary of Israel. Trump even described the group as “very smart.” His comments cast blame on Netanyahu, suggesting that he and Israel were unprepared for the crisis.

The White House, however, did not mince words in its response. Andrew Bates, the White House deputy press secretary, labeled Trump’s remarks as “dangerous and unhinged,” expressing bewilderment at any American praising an Iran-backed terrorist organization as “smart.”

Trump’s comments also met with disapproval from some of his rivals within the Republican party. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the timing of the remarks absurd, given that they attacked Israel, a long-standing ally of the United States. He also denounced Trump’s praise of Hezbollah as “very smart.” Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president, emphasized the need for American leaders to stand firmly with Israel during these trying times.

The Israel-Hamas conflict, now in its seventh day, has exacted a heavy toll, with the death toll surpassing 2,800 on both sides. The conflict was ignited by a surprise attack launched by Hamas militants, citing a longstanding dispute over the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a site of significance for both Muslims and Jews. Israel has responded to the attack with a sustained barrage of airstrikes.

In the midst of this escalating conflict, citizens from various countries have found themselves caught up in the turmoil, with some being killed or abducted by Hamas militants. The number of confirmed US citizens killed has reached 25, while 17 others are reported missing, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
