Israel-Hamas Hostage Deal – 39 Palestinian Prisoners Released in Ceasefire Exchange

Published on

In a significant development within the Israel-Hamas conflict, 39 Palestinian prisoners, including 33 children and six women, were released by Israeli authorities on November 26. This move comes in response to Hamas releasing 13 Israelis and four foreigners as part of the second round of swaps under the ceasefire deal between the two parties.

As per the terms of the truce, Israel has introduced an additional condition, allowing the extension of the ceasefire for an extra day for every 10 hostages freed. So far, Hamas has released 24 of the approximately 240 hostages taken during its October 7 attack on Israel, which triggered the conflict.

The ceasefire agreement outlines the release of 150 Palestinian prisoners by Israel and the simultaneous release of 50 hostages by Hamas. This four-day truce marks a crucial breakthrough in one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 21st century, with thousands of lives lost over the past 48 days.

The impact of the truce extends to the two million people residing in the Gaza Strip, who have endured weeks of relentless bombing by Israel. This retaliation was in response to what Israel considered the most significant onslaught on Jews since the Holocaust.

Over the next four days, nearly 50 more hostages are expected to be freed, leaving approximately 190 still held by Hamas. Simultaneously, Israel plans to release 150 Palestinian prisoners.

Qatari authorities have revealed that the initial group of 13 hostages will include women and children from the same families. The ceasefire terms specify a “complete ceasefire, with no air or ground attacks,” along with the necessity for clear skies without drones to ensure the safe release of hostages.

Furthermore, Israel has provided a list of 300 Palestinians eligible for release if the truce extends beyond the initial four days. This list comprises 33 women, 267 children and youths under 19, along with 49 Hamas members. The unfolding developments suggest a potential easing of tensions and a step towards lasting peace in the region.
