When Israel and Hamas agreed on a truce brokered by Qatar, it seemed like peace was finally on the horizon. But behind this agreement were intense discussions and fears of it falling apart before it even began.

The terms of the truce were vague, leaving questions about when and how it would start. Qatar, known for its diplomatic efforts, wanted to ensure both Israel and Hamas understood and agreed on every detail.

Abdullah Al Sulaiti, a lead negotiator from Qatar, was anxious about the agreement breaking. To ensure success, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani canceled his trips and focused solely on the negotiations.

In a crucial meeting on Nov. 22, negotiators from Qatar, Israel’s Mossad chief, and Egyptian intelligence officers hashed out the final details. Meanwhile, Hamas representatives were involved through separate talks.

Qatar’s meticulous approach helped clear misunderstandings. They resolved issues like where Israeli tanks would be stationed in Gaza during the truce and how Israeli soldiers would leave Gaza hospitals.

The agreement also included a plan to prevent small incidents from disrupting the ceasefire. But shortly after the truce, an incident tested this plan when Israeli soldiers fired on Palestinians.

Qatar played a vital role in communication, even connecting with the U.S. president during negotiations. Finally, after a grueling nine-hour meeting, Qatar announced the truce would begin on Nov. 24 in Gaza.
