Imran Khan Granted Bail in Riot-Linked Cases Amid Political Turmoil

Published on

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan secured bail in a significant legal development, with an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, granting him relief in 12 cases related to attacks on military sites that occurred in May of the previous year.

This decision follows the indictment of Khan and his aide, former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, on February 6, in connection to the violence that ensued after Khan’s arrest in an alleged corruption case.

The unrest resulted in the damaging of government buildings and military installations, including an army headquarters, by rioters. Notably, the court set bail for Khan at a surety bond of PKR 1 lakh (approximately Rs. 30,000) in all 12 cases, emphasizing that there was no justification to keep him in custody, especially considering that all the accused in the May 9 cases were already on bail.

Despite this legal reprieve, Khan remains incarcerated due to convictions in other cases. The court’s decision also coincides with the release of Pakistan’s election results, revealing that independent candidates, predominantly supported by Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured a majority of seats. However, the election was marked by delayed results, and Nawaz Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League (N), emerged as the single largest party.

The legal battles against Khan have been ongoing since his removal as prime minister in April 2022 through a vote of no-confidence. Recent convictions include a 14-year jail term in the Toshakhana case, involving the illegal sale of state gifts received during his tenure, and a 10-year jail term in the Cipher case for leaking state secrets. As Khan faces these challenges, the political landscape in Pakistan continues to undergo significant shifts.
