China expressed sorrow over the demise of Henry Kissinger, a former U.S. Secretary of State, renowned for his influential role in shaping the post-World War II world. Kissinger, who passed away at the age of 100, is remembered as a key figure in establishing diplomatic ties between China and the United States in the 1970s.

The Chinese ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, conveyed the nation’s condolences, stating, “It is a tremendous loss for both our countries and the world.” Acknowledging Kissinger’s historic contributions to China-U.S. relations, Xie Feng emphasized that the centenarian diplomat would always be cherished as a valued old friend in the hearts of the Chinese people.

In a recent obituary, Beijing’s state broadcaster CCTV highlighted Kissinger’s “historic contribution to the opening of the door to U.S.-China relations.” As the national security advisor to then-U.S. President Richard Nixon, Kissinger played a crucial role in establishing diplomatic ties with China, paving the way for Nixon’s landmark visit. This diplomatic effort not only reshaped the Cold War dynamics but also contributed to China’s ascent as a major economic power.

Kissinger’s influence extended beyond his diplomatic career, as he later advised businesses on China, warning against a hawkish turn in U.S. policy. Chinese officials, expressing nostalgia for the era of rapprochement under Kissinger, emphasized the need for his diplomatic wisdom in current U.S.-China relations.

Online, Chinese netizens commemorated Kissinger’s efforts to navigate the complexities of U.S.-China relations, with many acknowledging him as a worthy rival and partner. Some users expressed the view that his passing marked a significant moment, symbolizing China’s rise as a global power.
