Recent reports from China highlight a spike in respiratory illnesses since mid-October, attributed by officials to the relaxation of COVID-19 measures. Chinese authorities link these infections to known pathogens like the flu, RSV, COVID-19, and mycoplasma pneumoniae, a common bacterial infection.

In their letter to Biden, Senate Republicans repeatedly referred to an “unknown” illness affecting Chinese children. They expressed concerns over the Chinese Communist Party’s history of concealing health crises and urged immediate restrictions on travel between the U.S. and China until more about the illness is known.

The letter was signed by Republican Senators including Marco Rubio, JD Vance, Rick Scott, Tommy Tuberville, and Mike Braun. However, health officials, including CDC Director Mandy Cohen and Maria Van Kerkhove from the WHO, have stated there’s no cause for immediate alarm.

Cohen reiterated that the reported illnesses are linked to existing pathogens and not a new or novel threat. Van Kerkhove highlighted that the current disease wave in China doesn’t match the severity seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.
