Vi, one of India’s telecom operators, has hinted at the imminent launch of its 5G network services in the country through an update on its website. While Airtel and Jio commenced their 5G network rollouts over a year ago, Vi is gearing up to bring 5G connectivity to select locations in Pune and Delhi.
The telecom company recently achieved peak speeds exceeding 3.7Gbps on the high-speed millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum band, showcasing its readiness to introduce 5G services.
The updated information on Vi’s website urges users to “Get ready to experience the potential of the Vi 5G network in India with 5G live at select places in Pune and Delhi.” However, specific details about the launch dates and locations remain undisclosed.
Vi emphasizes that customers will need a 5G-ready SIM card to connect to the network, with assurance that its existing 4G SIM cards are 5G-ready.
Earlier this year, Vi conducted successful tests, achieving peak speeds of 3.7Gbps on the mmWave spectrum band and download speeds of up to 1.5Gbps on the 3.5GHz spectrum band.
While mmWave testing took place in Pune, sub-6GHz spectrum band tests were conducted in Pune and Gandhinagar.
Despite trailing behind Airtel and Jio in the 5G race, Vi’s recent developments indicate progress toward bridging the gap.
A blog post by Vi earlier this year clarified that users with 5G-capable smartphones and Vi’s 5G-ready SIM cards will be able to access the network upon rollout. The telecom operator has also committed to providing 5G-ready SIM cards at Vi stores.
As Vi prepares to enter the 5G arena, it aims to offer competitive services in the wake of Airtel’s ‘5G Plus’ and Jio’s ‘True 5G’ networks, which are reportedly available in over 10,000 cities. Both leading operators have already granted subscribers with active plans unlimited access to their 5G networks, signaling a new era in Indian telecommunications.
