Elon Musk, a key figure in OpenAI’s history and an early investor, expressed deep concern over recent developments at the ChatGPT company, highlighting the significance of the situation in the realm of AI safety.
In a tweet on Monday, Musk emphasized the need for the public to understand the reasons behind the board’s decision to remove Altman as CEO. Musk suggested that if the decision was rooted in AI safety concerns, it would have implications for the entire planet.
“Very important for the public to know why the board felt so strongly about their actions. If it was a matter of AI safety, that would affect all of Earth,” Musk posted on X.
Adding to his concerns, Musk underlined the non-publicly traded nature of OpenAI, emphasizing that monetary considerations pale in comparison to the potential risks associated with AI mishaps. He stressed that the core mission of OpenAI, founded in 2015 as a non-profit organization by Altman, Musk, Ilya Sutskever, and Greg Brockman (former OpenAI president who has also resigned), is centered on advancing digital intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
Defending Co-founder and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, who reportedly played a key role in Altman’s ousting, Musk vouched for Sutskever’s strong “moral compass” and his lack of pursuit of power.
“He would not take such drastic action unless he felt it was absolutely necessary,” Musk affirmed.
