In a surprising turn of events amidst the OpenAI saga, former CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman are set to join Microsoft, leading a groundbreaking advanced AI research team. Expressing enthusiasm, Nadella declared, “We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.”

Altman is slated to assume the role of CEO for this innovative AI research team, signifying a fresh era of innovation within Microsoft. Nadella, known for fostering independent identities within Microsoft, drew parallels with successful endeavors like GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn.

The unexpected upheaval at OpenAI saw Altman’s removal over the weekend, allegedly orchestrated by the board, led by co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. This move took the tech industry by surprise, leading to the resignation of several OpenAI employees, including co-founder Greg Brockman.

Nadella’s announcement hints at Microsoft not only welcoming Altman and Brockman but also potentially absorbing other talented OpenAI professionals who resigned during the recent turmoil.

OpenAI’s official statement on November 18 cited Altman’s inconsistent communication with the board as the reason for his removal, stating, “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Emmett Shear, former CEO of Twitch, has been appointed as the new CEO of OpenAI. Nadella expressed optimism about working with Shear and OpenAI’s new leadership team.

Sam Altman gained recognition for introducing ChatGPT, a groundbreaking AI bot that revolutionized the field. His departure from the CEO position at OpenAI sparked widespread reactions within the tech industry.

Nadella’s announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft’s revelation about developing an AI chip capable of training large language models. This strategic move is viewed as an effort to reduce dependency on Nvidia, potentially leading to cost savings.
