Amazon Prime Alters Streaming Experience: Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos Now Come at a Price

Published on

Amazon Prime is making significant changes to its streaming offerings, impacting users who prefer enhanced audio and visual quality. The e-commerce giant has decided to remove Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound from its basic ad-supported tier, prompting users to pay an additional fee if they wish to continue enjoying these premium features.

Streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix are constantly refining their plans to optimize profits and cater to user preferences. In Amazon’s latest move, it has been confirmed that Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos surround sound are no longer included in the basic ad-supported tier. To access these features along with an ad-free streaming experience, users are now required to pay an extra fee.

This adjustment comes on the heels of Amazon’s introduction of ads to the standard plan starting from January 29, 2024. Users in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada are now expected to pay an additional $2.99 for an ad-free experience, effectively regaining access to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The initial report on this change came from 4KFilme, revealing that TVs from popular brands such as LG, Sony, and Samsung were displaying Amazon Prime content in HDR10 and Dolby Digital 5.1, excluding Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

The Verge has since confirmed this alteration, citing an Amazon spokesperson, Katie Barker, who stated, “Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos capabilities are only available on the ad-free option, for relevant titles.”

As of now, it remains unclear whether these changes will be implemented in India. Currently, Indian users can subscribe to Amazon Prime at Rs 1,499 for an all-inclusive membership lasting one year, or choose from monthly plans at Rs 299 or a three-month plan at Rs 599.
