Virat Kohli’s Alertness Saves Shubman Gill as Temba Bavuma Tries to Disrupt Stumps

In the high-stakes battle between the top two teams of the Cricket World Cup 2023, India and South Africa faced off in a thrilling showdown at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. As the renowned duo of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill sought to build a formidable partnership, a moment of intrigue unfolded.

It all began when Shubman Gill attempted a daring single, putting his wicket at risk. The throw from the fielders was not precisely on target, but South Africa’s skipper, Temba Bavuma, opted for an unconventional move. He attempted to disrupt the stumps using his hand, aiming to catch Gill short of the crease.

Bavuma’s unexpected antics didn’t cause any confusion among the Indian pair or the umpires. However, Virat Kohli was quick to point out to Gill the potential danger of the risky single. Notably, if the throw had been directed at Virat’s end, it could have placed him in a precarious situation.

As fate would have it, the duo managed to evade any run-out mishap on this occasion. Gill’s stay at the crease, though, didn’t last much longer, as he was eventually dismissed by Keshav Maharaj after scoring 23 runs.

In terms of the match itself, India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, won the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian team retained the same playing XI that had previously secured a resounding victory over Sri Lanka by a margin of 302 runs.

Rohit Sharma commented on the decision after winning the toss, saying, “We will bat first. Looks like a good pitch, it wasn’t to do with the pitch, we wanted to challenge ourselves. It’ll be a good game, two teams who have played consistent cricket and have topped the table, will be nice to win and go on top. I love to play over here, not just me, the entire team looks forward to playing at this historic ground. We’re playing the same team, don’t think we need to change anything with the way we’ve been playing.”

Rohit’s decision proved to be astute, as India compiled a score of over 300 runs with the bat and subsequently bowled out the Proteas for less than 100, securing a resounding and crucial victory in the tournament.
