In the gripping Spanish Super Cup semi-final clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at Al-Awwal Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Real emerged victorious with a thrilling 5-3 scoreline. However, the match took an unexpected turn for Toni Kroos as he faced continuous whistles and boos from the crowd every time he touched the ball.

Kroos, who entered the game as a second-half substitute for Luka Modric, experienced the vocal disapproval of a significant portion of the audience. The unusual reaction stemmed from Kroos’ previous criticism of top players moving to play club football in Saudi Arabia, a trend that has seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Sadio Mane, and Karim Benzema joining various clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Kroos expressed his reservations about players in the prime of their careers making such moves, suggesting that the decisions were primarily driven by financial incentives rather than ambitious sporting choices.

“Everyone has to make this decision for themselves… But it becomes very difficult when players who are in the middle of their careers and have the quality to play for top clubs in Europe decide to make such changes,” Kroos stated, emphasizing the impact on the football landscape.

Responding to the crowd’s reaction, Kroos took a light-hearted approach, sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter): “That was fun today! Amazing crowd!”

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed bewilderment at the crowd’s response, highlighting the complexity of understanding such behavior towards Kroos.
