Renowned cricket expert Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his support for Yashasvi Jaiswal, endorsing the young cricketer’s potential to secure a spot in the Indian Test side for the imminent five-match home series against England.
Gavaskar, the former India captain, is confident in Jaiswal’s ability to shine in familiar conditions, citing his past performances as an opener in West Indies and South Africa.
Despite a relatively subdued performance in the recent two-Test series in South Africa, where Jaiswal managed 50 runs, Gavaskar remains optimistic about the player’s capabilities. The series also witnessed modest scores from Shubman Gill, India captain Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer, scoring 74, 60, and 41 runs, respectively.
Shreyas Iyer, who showcased exceptional form in the 50-over ICC marquee event with 530 runs in 11 innings, including two centuries and three half-centuries, holds a strong record in the middle order. With 707 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 39.28, including one century and five fifties, Iyer’s contribution to the team is noteworthy.
Gavaskar further emphasized the significance of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, particularly in the opening Test against England in Hyderabad. The cricket legend, aged 74, urged Sharma to judiciously utilize his bowling resources on the traditionally batsman-friendly surface, testing the captain’s strategic acumen.
On the batting front, Gavaskar expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma’s ability to perform against the English side in the upcoming five-match Test series. He recalled Sharma’s remarkable 161-run innings in Chennai during the previous series against England, highlighting Sharma’s overall record of 747 runs in nine Tests at an average of 48.19, featuring two centuries and three half-centuries, against the visitors.
Sunil Gavaskar’s endorsement of Yashasvi Jaiswal and his insights into the challenges facing Rohit Sharma’s captaincy add intrigue to the anticipation surrounding the upcoming Test series against England. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to see if Jaiswal can live up to the expectations and if Sharma can lead the team to success on the home turf.
