Ibrahim Zadran Makes History: Fastest Afghan Batter to 1,000 ODI Runs

Published on

Afghanistan’s cricket sensation, Ibrahim Zadran, has etched his name in the annals of cricket history by achieving the distinction of becoming the fastest Afghan batter to reach 1,000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket. This remarkable feat was achieved during Match 22 of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup in Chennai when Zadran scored his third run against Pakistan. His journey to this milestone has been nothing short of spectacular, cementing his reputation as a run-machine for Afghanistan in the ODI format.

Breaking Records and Surpassing Peers:

Ibrahim Zadran’s ODI debut against West Indies in 2019 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. In just 24 innings, he accomplished the impressive feat of scoring 1,000 runs, setting a new record for Afghanistan. Notably, Zadran surpassed his opening partner, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who took 27 innings to achieve this milestone. This places Ibrahim among elite company, as only 16 batters have reached the 1,000-run mark in ODI cricket more rapidly.

14th Afghanistan Batter to Join the 1,000-Run Club:

Zadran’s achievement makes him the 14th Afghan batter to cross the 1,000-run mark in ODIs. What sets him apart is his outstanding average of over 47, the highest among Afghan batters with 1,000-plus ODI runs. In this regard, Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the only other Afghan batter with an average exceeding 36. Adding to his illustrious ODI career, Ibrahim Zadran has notched up four fifties and as many centuries in the format, with an impressive 162 as his highest score.

Fourth Afghan Opener to Reach 1,000 ODI Runs:

All of Ibrahim Zadran’s ODI runs have been accumulated while opening the batting. Consequently, he has earned the distinction of becoming the fourth Afghan batter to achieve the milestone of 1,000 ODI runs as an opener. He joins the esteemed ranks of Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1,020), Mohammad Shahzad (2,049), and Noor Ali Zadran (1,216) in this category. In terms of centuries, Zadran trails only Gurbaz, who has scored five ODI tons while opening for Afghanistan.

Notable Milestones and Highest Scores:

Ibrahim Zadran’s remarkable journey includes a memorable 162 against Sri Lanka in November 2022, which stands as the highest individual score by an Afghanistan batter in ODI cricket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the only other Afghan player to achieve a score in excess of 150 in the format, with his notable 151 against Pakistan in August 2023. These milestones serve as a testament to the exceptional talent and potential within Afghanistan’s cricketing ranks.

Ibrahim Zadran’s achievement underscores his significant contribution to Afghan cricket and sets a high standard for aspiring batters in the nation. As he continues to make strides in ODI cricket, the future looks promising for both him and Afghanistan on the international stage.
