AUS vs AFG: Glenn Maxwell’s Heroics Propel Australia to Semis in ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023

In an exhilarating clash at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Afghanistan’s hopes of a stunning victory were dashed by Glenn Maxwell’s incredible performance, as he scored an outstanding 201 runs, all while battling through an injury. This extraordinary feat not only thrilled the crowd but also secured Australia’s spot in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals.

Maxwell’s 201 runs off 128 balls not only turned the match in Australia’s favor but also etched his name in history as the first Australian player to achieve a double hundred in ODI cricket.

Afghanistan, initially showing promise in defending their target of 291 runs, encountered an uphill battle when Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai triggered a stunning batting collapse. Naveen dismissed Travis Head for a duck and later Mitchell Marsh for 24 runs, while Omarzai swiftly removed David Warner and Josh Inglis in consecutive deliveries, leaving Australia in a precarious position at 49/4 in just 8.2 overs. Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell were the last men standing for Australia.

Despite losing partners, including Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell continued to dominate the game. Skipper Pat Cummins provided support, but it was Maxwell’s exceptional performance that fueled Australia’s remarkable comeback. Maxwell was fortunate on a few occasions, benefiting from lapses in fielding and a successful review.

In the first innings, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran was the standout performer, leading their fight with an impressive unbeaten 129 runs from 143 balls. Zadran, opening the innings, became the first Afghan cricketer to achieve a century in ODI World Cups. Rashid Khan also played a crucial role, contributing a quick 35* off 18 balls.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Zadran gave Afghanistan a solid start after winning the toss and opting to bat, adding 38 runs for the opening partnership. Josh Hazlewood removed Gurbaz for 21, and Zadran and Rahmat Shah combined for an 83-run partnership for the third wicket before Glenn Maxwell intervened. Shah was dismissed for 30, and Mitchell Starc subsequently dismissed Afghanistan’s captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, for 26. In the 43rd over, Adam Zampa took another wicket, catching Azmatullah Omarzai off Maxwell for 22. Hazlewood later removed Mohammad Nabi for 12.
