In the arid valleys of the Djebel Tahar region in southern Tunisia lies the town of Matmata, where an ancient architectural wonder continues to captivate – permanent underground houses known as troglodyte houses. These unique dwellings, blending seamlessly with the Dahar highlands, offer a glimpse into Tunisia’s prehistoric past.

Situated 35 km south of Tunis, Matmata’s cratered terrain is adorned with olive orchards and palm trees, nestled on the Sahara desert’s border at an elevation of 600 meters. The troglodyte dwellings, carved into the earth, have been home to the Arabic-speaking Berber people for centuries. These underground shelters, born out of a need to escape the intense heat of the Matmata desert, are remarkable relics of the region’s history.

The Berbers, possibly settling in the 11th century, sought refuge in the mountains from Arab assimilationist policies. Many believe settlement may have started even earlier. The majority of Berber workers in the agricultural sector made these underground homes a necessity to survive the harsh desert climate. The troglodyte architecture provided respite from the scorching heat, becoming a vital part of their lifestyle.

While floods and storms in the 1960s posed challenges to these subterranean homes, they have been meticulously updated with modern conveniences. The troglodyte houses feature courtyards connected to backyards, essential for proper functioning and ventilation. These central gardens allow family members to socialize and carry out daily activities together.

Matmata and its Berber population underwent modernization under Tunisian President Habib Bourguiba, receiving new amenities. Additionally, these iconic homes found their way into popular culture, gaining fame as the dwellings of Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars series.
