Tragic Loss at UIUC Sparks Investigation and Concerns Over Campus Safety

Published on

The grieving parents of Akul B. Dhawan, an 18-year-old student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), have filed a complaint against the university’s police department, alleging negligence in the tragic death of their son. Dhawan went missing last Saturday, and his lifeless body was discovered almost 10 hours later on the back porch of a building near the university campus.

According to reports, Dhawan’s friend informed authorities that he had been missing for about an hour. The preliminary findings of an autopsy conducted by the Champaign County Coroner’s Office revealed signs of hypothermia, likely attributed to the severe cold temperatures experienced in Illinois during the latter half of January.

While campus police initially believe the death to be accidental, Dhawan’s parents question the handling of the search and have accused the university police department of negligence. They assert that their son was found just 400 feet from where he was reported missing, based on location-tracking data from his phone.

“This is bizarre, that a kid is never found who was just less than a block, like one minute away, sitting there, dead, frozen to death,” said Ish Dhawan, the grieving father. The family demands answers and seeks clarification on the university’s search policy to prevent others from experiencing a similar tragedy.

When Akul Dhawan was reported missing, university police conducted searches in areas where he was last seen, his residence hall, and the likely path between the two locations. Despite efforts, they were unable to locate him until the following morning when an employee of the university discovered his lifeless body on a back porch.

The grieving parents, currently residing in California, have met with top university officials to seek transparency and understanding of the UI’s search procedures. The family hopes that their loss prompts a review of campus safety measures, preventing similar incidents in the future.

Dhawan, who had recently turned 18, had chosen to study robotics at the University of Illinois’ Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering against his parents’ wishes for him to stay closer to home. The family’s quest for answers aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Akul Dhawan’s tragic demise and ensure that such heartbreaking incidents are avoided in the future.
