On Thursday morning, tragedy struck as a section of Gokulpuri metro station collapsed, resulting in the untimely demise of a 53-year-old man named Vinod Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar. According to police reports, four others sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The collapse, which occurred around 10 am, caused damage to two bikes and two scooters, exacerbating the impact of the unfortunate event. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Joy Tirkey, overseeing the north-east region, confirmed the incident, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Responding promptly to the crisis, fire tenders and police personnel rushed to the scene, where they encountered a grim scene with several vehicles trapped beneath the debris. The Fire Department, upon receiving a distress call at 11:10 am, swiftly dispatched six fire tenders to the location.
An official from the fire department shed light on the unfolding events, revealing that the collapsed structure was a part of the functioning metro line. Amidst the chaos, two individuals were rescued from the rubble and swiftly transported to GTB Hospital for urgent medical attention, while two others were fortunate to be extricated prior to the arrival of fire services personnel.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in infrastructure maintenance and the critical role of emergency responders in mitigating the consequences of such unforeseen disasters.
