In the aftermath of the 16th Assembly elections in Rajasthan, a profound trend has emerged—the highest voter turnout since the historic 1967 elections. The Data Intelligence Unit (DIU) examined the past 14 Assembly elections in the state, revealing a complex interplay of rising and falling voter turnouts. Significantly, the data underscores the evolving gender dynamics, with female voter turnout reaching new heights.

Key Findings:

Closing Gender Divide: One of the most striking revelations is the narrowing gender gap in voter turnout. In several constituencies, the margin between male and female turnout is now less than one per cent, challenging historical imbalances.

Historical Context: Examining the historical context, Rajasthan’s voter turnout saw a significant rise post-1980, marking a departure from the low engagement witnessed before the 1980 Assembly elections. The latest elections recorded a turnout of 74.6 per cent, showcasing a consistent upward trajectory.

Changing Gender Dynamics: The gender gap in turnout has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. From a substantial difference of 21.6 percentage points in 1962, it has dwindled to a negligible 0.2 percentage points in 2023. Female voter turnout has surged from 41.1 per cent in 1962 to an impressive 74.7 per cent in 2023.

Women’s Electoral Empowerment: In the 2023 Assembly elections, women voters emerged as a significant force. Female voter participation not only surpassed men in numerous constituencies but also played a pivotal role in shaping the electoral landscape.

Constituency Dynamics: Fatehpur and Mandawa witnessed female turnout outstripping male participation by significant margins, showcasing a formidable female advantage. However, in constituencies like Dag and Phalodi, men’s turnout overshadowed women’s.

Challenges Ahead: Despite these positive trends, challenges persist in certain rural areas where entrenched norms hinder women’s full participation in voting. Overcoming these barriers is crucial for fostering inclusivity in the democratic process.
