Pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj announced on Sunday that his organization will stage a highway blockade near the Hoskote toll plaza in Bengaluru to protest the ongoing Cauvery water dispute.
According to Nagaraj, this highway blockade is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, October 10.
Earlier last week, members of pro-Kannada organizations were detained by Mandya police during protests related to the Cauvery Water Issue.
The dispute over sharing Cauvery river waters has been a long-standing issue between the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The river is a vital source of water for both states.
The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee had issued an order directing Karnataka to release 3000 cusecs of Cauvery water at Biligundlu from September 28 to October 15, 2023.
In response to this order, Karnataka filed a review petition in both the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA). Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his disappointment with the committee’s recommendation and stated that Karnataka would challenge the order in the Supreme Court.
The Cauvery water-sharing dispute has caused political unrest in Karnataka, with former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai accusing the state government of lacking the will to protect the interests of farmers.
It is important to note that the Karnataka government had cited a severe drought in some parts of the state as the reason for refusing to supply water to Tamil Nadu. In response, the Tamil Nadu government accused Karnataka of misleading the nation regarding the water supply issue.
