Initially introduced as a pandemic relief measure in 2020, the PMGKAY has been providing 5 kilograms of free foodgrains per month to over 80 crore impoverished individuals.

This extension decision was finalized during the Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday and will encompass a total expenditure of approximately Rs 11.8 lakh crore over the next five years, as revealed by Anurag Thakur.

Originally launched to address the challenges of the pandemic, the PMGKAY augmented the provisions of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) by providing an additional 5 kg of free foodgrains per beneficiary each month.

As the PMGKAY reached its culmination in December 2022 following multiple extensions, it was merged into the NFSA, ensuring a year of free rations for the beneficiaries.
