Nitish Kumar Declines Opposition Alliance Convenor Role in Virtual Meet

In a virtual meeting convened to discuss seat-sharing for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bihar Chief Minister and JDU chief Nitish Kumar made it clear on Saturday that he would not take on the role of the convenor for the Opposition alliance.

The discussions also encompassed participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and other matters pertaining to the alliance.

During the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as the chairperson of the opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc, as per sources.

Key leaders from the I.N.D.I.A bloc were present, but the meeting noted the absence of two significant figures – Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray and Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee.

Notable attendees included Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin, and party leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, participating through video conferencing.

The grand alliance, comprising 26-28 political parties and formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, was a focal point of the discussions. Nitish Kumar’s decision not to take on the convenor role adds an intriguing layer to the dynamics within the Opposition alliance.
