Navigating Diplomatic Challenges: Jaishankar Emphasizes the Importance of Neighbourly Relations Amidst Maldives Tensions

In the midst of a diplomatic standoff with the Maldives, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, underscores the essential nature of mutual cooperation between neighboring nations.

Addressing the escalating ‘India out’ campaign in the Maldives, Jaishankar, speaking at an interaction at IIM-Mumbai, emphasized, “History and geography exert significant influence, and there’s no escaping these powerful forces.”

The diplomatic rift gained momentum following derogatory remarks by Maldivian politicians against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Jaishankar, acknowledging the strained relations, reiterated the crucial interdependence of neighboring countries.

Adding to the complexity, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, perceived as pro-China, called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel by March 15 as part of the ‘India out’ campaign. This move is part of the Maldives government’s reassessment of bilateral agreements inked with India during the previous regime.

Simultaneously, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), an opposition force, has garnered sufficient signatures to initiate a no-confidence motion, aiming to launch impeachment proceedings against the Mohamed Muizzu administration.
