Maldives Faces Tourism Backlash After Officials’ Controversial Comments on Indian PM Modi

Maldives, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism industry, is currently grappling with a potential tourism crisis. This article delves into the repercussions of the controversy and its impact on Maldives’ crucial tourism sector.

The clash initiated when Prime Minister Modi shared picturesque moments from his visit to Lakshadweep, an Indian island chain, without mentioning Maldives. In response, the Maldivian officials labeled Modi as a “clown,” “terrorist,” and a “puppet of Israel,” leading to swift action by the Maldives government, which suspended the three officials from their positions.

Acknowledging the derogatory comments, the Maldives government emphasized that they were personal opinions, not reflective of the country’s stance. Stressing the importance of responsible expression, the government aimed to prevent the incident from negatively impacting the diplomatic ties between Maldives and India.

This controversy unfolds at a sensitive time, coinciding with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to China. As he seeks to strengthen ties with Beijing, the archipelago must navigate delicate relations with both China and its closest neighbor, India.

Maldives heavily relies on tourism, with a significant portion of its income originating from Indian visitors. In 2023, Indian tourists accounted for 11% of the total tourism market, making over 209,000 trips to the Maldives. In response to the officials’ remarks, Indian holidaymakers began canceling their trips, using the hashtag #BoycottMaldives on social media.

Prominent figures, including Bollywood actors and cricket players, joined the movement, urging citizens to explore local destinations instead. The hashtag #ChaloLakshadweep gained momentum, encouraging people to visit the destination Modi showcased, further amplifying the impact of the boycott.

Beyond individual cancellations, travel sites and trade bodies in India demonstrated solidarity by suspending bookings and business operations with Maldives. EaseMyTrip, a leading Indian travel site, temporarily halted flight bookings to Maldives, signaling a unified stance against the controversial remarks.

The Confederation of All India Traders, a significant trade body, called on its members to suspend business with Maldives until a formal apology or remedial measures were offered. This stance was reiterated by Praveen Khandelwal, the Secretary-General of the group, representing a vast network of traders and associations in India.

Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer condemned the officials’ remarks, emphasizing the archipelago’s commitment to positive dialogue with its international partners. The Indian High Commission in Maldives raised concerns with the Maldivian Foreign Office, reflecting the diplomatic fallout from the controversy.

While the dispute raises challenges for the Maldives, it underscores the delicate balance the nation must maintain between its relationships with India and China. The swift actions taken by the Maldivian government in response to the controversy demonstrate the value placed on preserving diplomatic ties, especially in the face of potential economic repercussions in the tourism sector.
