Air India and SpiceJet have also faced fines from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for insufficient preparedness leading to fog-related delays.

Key Points:

  1. IndiGo’s Penalty: IndiGo Airlines incurred a significant fine after a video surfaced showing passengers eating on the tarmac during a flight delay. The DGCA imposed a Rs. 1.2 crore penalty, and Mumbai Airport received a separate Rs. 30 lakh fine for their involvement in the incident.
  2. Air India and SpiceJet Fines: Air India and SpiceJet were fined Rs. 30 lakh each by the DGCA for inadequate preparedness causing delays in the backdrop of dense fog over Delhi and the Indo-Gangetic plains. The airlines faced penalties for not complying with Aircraft Rules, 1937, and failing to roster qualified pilots for specific flights during the fog season.
  3. Violation of Apron Discipline: The DGCA labeled the incident as a “violation of apron discipline.” IndiGo and Mumbai Airport received show-cause notices from the government for permitting passengers on the active apron in defiance of safety directives.
  4. Response from IndiGo: In response to the controversy, IndiGo issued an apology, acknowledging the incident on January 14 when a Goa to Delhi flight was diverted to Mumbai due to low visibility in Delhi. The airline expressed regret to its customers and pledged to take necessary steps to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

This regulatory action sheds light on the importance of adherence to safety protocols and preparedness, especially during adverse weather conditions.
