In a commendable display of prompt action, the Indian Navy successfully intervened to assist a cargo vessel, MV GENCO PICARDY, under drone attack in the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday night.

The vessel, flagged from the Marshall Islands, sent out a distress call after a drone strike at 11:11 pm. INS Visakhapatnam, deployed for anti-piracy patrol in the region, swiftly responded to the call, ensuring the safety of the 22 crew members, including nine Indians, with no reported casualties.

Key Highlights:

    1. Rescue Operation: The timely response from INS Visakhapatnam, part of the Indian Navy’s anti-piracy mission, averted a potential crisis. The vessel, facing a drone attack, had 22 crew members on board. The quick and efficient intervention ensured that the fire, resulting from the attack, was brought under control.
    2. EOD Assessment: After the distressing incident, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists conducted a thorough assessment. Following their evaluation, the area was declared safe for further transit, providing relief to the crew and allowing the cargo vessel, MV GENCO PICARDY, to proceed on its journey to the next port of call.
    3. Recent Rescue Operation: This incident follows another successful rescue operation by the Indian Navy a week ago in the North Arabian Sea. Commandos from the Navy’s MARCOS unit rescued 21 crew members, including 15 Indians, from the Liberian-flagged MV LILA NORFOLK. The vessel had reportedly been boarded by armed hijackers, emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to maritime security.
    4. Amidst Houthi Attacks: The Gulf of Aden incident occurs against the backdrop of rising concerns about Houthi rebel attacks on merchant vessels in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed group has intensified its assaults since November as a protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza. The situation has prompted shipping companies to alter routes, avoiding the Red Sea and opting for longer journeys around Africa.

This latest rescue operation underscores the Indian Navy’s vigilance and capability in ensuring the safety and security of maritime activities, particularly in regions prone to geopolitical tensions and threats.
