The meeting, which included a crucial rendezvous with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, signifies the first visit by a sitting Indian Defence Minister to the UK in over two decades.

During the visit, Defence Minister Singh and his British counterpart, Grant Shapps, participated in the India-UK Defence Industry CEOs Roundtable at Trinity House in London.

The discussions not only underscored the collaborative efforts between the two nations but also shed light on the robust strategic partnership envisioned in the 2030 India-UK roadmap, unveiled in 2021.

A noteworthy development arising from the meeting was the UK’s announcement of plans to dispatch its Littoral Response Group to the Indian Ocean Region later this year. Additionally, a proposal for the Carrier Strike Group to visit Indian waters in 2025 was revealed, emphasizing the commitment of both nations to operate and train together.

Defence Secretary Shapps highlighted the importance of the growing strategic relationship, welcoming Singh to the UK. The leaders agreed on unparalleled levels of UK-India defence cooperation, extending beyond joint exercises to encompass knowledge sharing and instructor exchanges.

These steps align with the comprehensive strategic partnership outlined in the 2030 India-UK roadmap.

Looking ahead, both countries plan to undertake more intricate military exercises, culminating in a landmark joint exercise before the end of 2030. The shared goals include safeguarding critical trade routes and upholding the international rules-based system.

Defence Secretary Shapps emphasized the global significance of the strengthened relationship, stating, “There is absolutely no question that the world is becoming increasingly contested, so it’s vital that we continue to build on our strategic relationships with key partners like India.”

He highlighted the commitment to maintaining a free and prosperous Indo-Pacific and stressed the need to work collaboratively to uphold global security in the face of emerging threats and challenges.
