Empowering Homes with Solar Energy: A Guide to PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently unveiled an ambitious initiative aimed at brightening homes across the nation with sustainable energy. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, backed by an investment exceeding Rs. 75,000 crores, aspires to illuminate over 1 crore households by providing 300 units of free electricity monthly.

This groundbreaking scheme, initially introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the Interim Budget 2024-’25, is set to revolutionize the way we harness solar power. Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of encouraging citizens to embrace solar energy by incentivizing rooftop solar panel installations.

Through substantial subsidies directly deposited into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, the government aims to alleviate any financial burden associated with adopting solar technology. Additionally, concessional bank loans will further facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources.

Urban local bodies and panchayats will also be incentivized to promote rooftop solar systems within their jurisdictions, fostering economic growth, reducing energy expenses, and generating employment opportunities.

Under this scheme, individuals can avail themselves of the benefits of solar energy by following a simple application process outlined on the official website: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying for the PM Surya Ghar Yojana:

Step 1: Registration

  • Visit the portal and select your state.
  • Choose your electricity distribution company.
  • Enter your electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email address.

Step 2: Application

  • Log in using your consumer number and contact details.
  • Apply for rooftop solar installation.

Step 3: Approval

  • Wait for approval of your application.

Step 4: Installation

  • Upon approval, have the solar panels installed by a registered vendor within your electricity distribution company’s network.

Step 5: Net Metering

  • After installation, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.

Step 6: Commissioning

  • Download the commissioning certificate from the portal after the net meter is installed and inspected by the electricity distribution company.

Step 7: Subsidy Disbursement

  • Submit your bank account details and a cancelled cheque on the portal to receive your subsidy within 30 days.
