In an early morning operation on Thursday, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a prominent Congress leader and Bolath MLA, was arrested from his residence in Sector 5, Chandigarh. The arrest was made in connection with an older case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Jalalabad, Fazilka. The operation was carried out by a team of Fazilka police, led by a Superintendent of Police (SP) rank officer.
Khaira, visibly upset and questioning the police’s actions, alleged that he was being arrested as part of a political vendetta. He took to Facebook Live to voice his concerns and demanded to see his arrest warrants. He also insisted that the police personnel, some of whom were in plain clothes, identify themselves.
During the exchange, a police officer identified as DSP Jalalabad, Acchru Ram Sharma, clarified the nature of the case, stating it was related to the NDPS Act. Khaira, in response, claimed that the case had already been quashed by the Supreme Court.
The incident also involved the police entering Khaira’s bedroom in the early morning, which he protested against. It’s worth noting that Khaira has been an active critic of the government’s policies and has consistently expressed his views through social media platforms.
Efforts to obtain comments from Fazilka Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjeet Singh Dhesi were unsuccessful.
