Celebrating the Rich Heritage of Chindu Yakshaganam: Gaddam Sammaiah Honored with Padma Shri

Gaddam Sammaiah, a dedicated practitioner of the traditional art form Chindu Yakshaganam, expresses his joy at receiving the prestigious Padma Shri award for his significant contributions to this ancient theatrical masterpiece.

“I am elated to be recognized with the Padma Shri award for my commitment to the preservation of Chindu Yakshaganam. This acknowledgment is a testament to the efforts of the Director of Culture Department, the Telangana Government, and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, who have supported the cause. Having devoted 18 years to this art form, this recognition is a culmination of my passion and dedication,” shares Gaddam Sammaiah, an accomplished Chindu Yakshaganam artist.

Chindu Yakshaganam, deeply rooted in Telangana’s cultural fabric, seamlessly weaves together elements of dance, music, dialogue, costume, make-up, and stage techniques, presenting a distinctive and captivating artistic expression.

Sammaiah was conferred with the Padma Shri on the auspicious occasion of Republic Day, recognizing his outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of Chindu Yakshaganam.

The Padma Awards, announced by the Home Ministry, encompass 5 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan, and 110 Padma Shri Awards, acknowledging individuals across various disciplines such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.

The highest civilian awards in the country, Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The awards are a yearly tradition, announced on Republic Day and conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, typically in March or April.

This year’s list of awardees includes thirty women and eight individuals from the category of foreigners, NRI, PIO, OCI, along with nine posthumous awardees, showcasing the diversity and inclusivity of the recognition bestowed by the Padma Awards.
