BJP Leader Highlights Crowd Behavior at India-Pak Game, Draws Parallels with Afghanistan vs. England Match

In a recent turn of events during the 2023 Cricket World Cup, the behavior of the crowd has been a subject of discussion, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Giriraj Singh shedding light on the contrasting experiences at two different matches.

Afghanistan’s remarkable victory over defending champions England by 69 runs sent shockwaves through the World Cup, marking only their second win in the tournament’s history. The crowd at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium was a crucial part of this upset, offering overwhelming support to the Afghan players and igniting sheer excitement among spectators with every boundary and wicket.

Videos of the enthusiastic crowd cheering for the Afghan players went viral on social media, showcasing the true spirit of cricket fandom devoid of any religious connotations.

However, the India versus Pakistan match in Ahmedabad witnessed a different scenario. A section of the crowd taunted Muhammad Rizwan with chants of “Jai Shri Ram” after his dismissal, sparking controversy. DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin found this behavior “unacceptable,” and it raised questions about sportsmanship. Some fans pointed out that Indian fans have traditionally displayed respect towards their arch-rivals.

Giriraj Singh, taking to social media in Hindi, drew a parallel between the two situations. He stated, “The way Afghanistan got support on the field in yesterday’s match proves that religion has nothing to do with support on the field.” He further added, “Pakistan gets this kind of treatment from the audience because of its deeds.”

Afghanistan’s triumph over England on Sunday marked the first significant upset of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The Afghan team, which had previously lost their opening two games in India and had a 14-match losing streak in World Cup history, secured their second World Cup win, building on their sole victory against Scotland during the 2015 tournament.

Giriraj Singh’s perspective underlines the importance of celebrating the game of cricket as a unifying force, transcending religious or national boundaries, while also addressing the need for respectful behavior in the stands during high-stakes matches.
