OnePlus Open vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5: A Clash of Foldable Titans

Published on

OnePlus has entered the foldable phone arena with its OnePlus Open, ready to take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, one of the most popular foldable smartphones available. In this comparison, we’ll analyze the key features and specifications of the OnePlus Open and Galaxy Z Fold 5 to help you make an informed decision, especially if you’re considering adopting foldable technology for the first time.

Design and Display

Both phones follow a similar design pattern, featuring a full-sized outside cover display that unfolds to reveal a larger foldable inner display. Samsung has focused on improving the durability of the Galaxy Z Fold 5, offering better protection against dust and water with a gapless design for the inner folding screen and hinge.

The OnePlus Open boasts a slightly larger folding display at 7.82 inches compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s 7.6-inch screen. It also offers impressive display capabilities with a maximum brightness of 2,800 nits and the ability to go down to 1Hz to save battery. The Fold 5 offers a maximum brightness of 1,750 nits and an adjustable refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Both phones feature OLED displays on their outer and inner screens.

Performance

Both phones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, but there’s a difference in RAM and storage options. The OnePlus Open offers 16GB of RAM and multiple storage choices, while the Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes with 12GB of RAM and various storage capacities. Both phones run on their respective custom user interfaces – OneUI 6 for Samsung and Oxygen OS for OnePlus, on top of Android 13. Samsung’s OneUI 6 offers extensive customization options, ideal for multitasking.

Camera

In terms of camera specifications, the OnePlus Open has the upper hand. It features a new 48MP T808 sensor, which excels in low-light conditions. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 sports a 50MP Samsung GN3 sensor. The OnePlus Open also has a 64MP telephoto lens with up to 3x optical zoom, which can extend up to 6x due to its high resolution. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 10MP telephoto lens for up to 3x optical zoom. The OnePlus Open’s camera hardware offers more versatility.

Battery

The OnePlus Open boasts a larger 4,805mAh battery and supports 67W wired fast charging, capable of reaching a full charge from zero in just 42 minutes. OnePlus also includes the charger in the box. In contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a smaller 4,400mAh battery and supports 25W charging, but Samsung does not include the charger in the box. Both phones can easily last a full day with moderate usage, but the OnePlus Open’s larger battery and LTPO3-supported display contribute to longer battery life.

The OnePlus Open poses a significant challenge to Samsung’s dominance in the foldable phone market. It offers superior hardware, including LTPO3-supported displays, and its camera hardware is more versatile. First-time foldable phone users will appreciate its shorter cover display design frame.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 excels in areas such as IPX8 water resistance, wireless charging, and S Pen support. Samsung’s ecosystem is more comprehensive and seamlessly integrates with its wearables and other devices. If you’re looking for an affordable foldable phone, the OnePlus Open is a compelling choice. However, if you’re deeply embedded in Samsung’s ecosystem, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a more cohesive experience.

In this clash of foldable titans, both phones bring unique strengths to the table, making your choice a matter of personal preference and ecosystem compatibility.
