The long-awaited sequel to the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA VI, is reportedly set to be announced by Rockstar Games this week, with an anticipated trailer release next month as part of Rockstar Games’ 25th-anniversary celebrations, according to Bloomberg.
Grand Theft Auto V, the predecessor to GTA VI, is currently the second best-selling game of all time, with 185 million copies sold, ranking just behind Minecraft, which holds the additional advantage of being playable on mobile phones.
Hackers had previously leaked hours of early gameplay footage for Grand Theft Auto VI in the past year. Rockstar attributed the leak to a ‘network intrusion’ and promised to introduce GTA VI properly to the public when the time was right.
Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software, has taken steps to address corporate culture issues and improve work-life balance for employees following complaints of burnout after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
While Rockstar has confirmed they are working on GTA VI, specific details about the game have been scarce. Excitement surrounding the game has reached a fever pitch, with fans even searching for secret teases in Red Dead Online updates, as reported by IGN.
As for the release date of GTA VI, the exact date remains unclear. Previous industry analysts had expected the game to be released in the 2024 fiscal year, running from April 2023 to March 2024.
GTA VI is set in a fictional version of Miami and will feature two protagonists, a male and a female character, as reported by Bloomberg. Earlier reports indicated that Rockstar’s first female protagonist would be Latina and inspired by the notorious bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde. The Bloomberg report from earlier this year also highlighted Rockstar’s commitment to avoiding humor targeting marginalized communities, distinguishing GTA VI from its predecessors.
Leaked information from gaming website Games Radar, quoted by Bloomberg, suggests that GTA VI may feature a modern-day Vice City-like setting with new gameplay mechanics and enhanced artificial intelligence (AI). Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting more details as the highly anticipated announcement date approaches.
