Recently, Orla Baxendale, who had relocated from the UK to pursue a dance career in New York, purchased a seemingly harmless cookie from Stew Leonard’s grocery shop in Connecticut. Despite her meticulous scrutiny of product labels and carrying an EpiPen for emergencies, the Vanilla Florentine Cookies she consumed contained peanuts, triggering a fatal anaphylactic shock on January 11.

The Independent reported that Orla’s attorney emphasized her vigilance in checking ingredients and her habit of carrying an EpiPen. Unfortunately, the severity of her allergy rendered the emergency treatment ineffective, leading to her tragic demise.

In response to the incident, Stew Leonard’s grocery shop promptly recalled the batch of Vanilla Florentine Cookies. The company’s director, Meghan Bell, revealed that the cookies had undeclared peanuts and eggs, posing serious risks to individuals with allergies. This mislabeling has been linked to one reported death, highlighting the urgent need for stricter food labeling regulations.

Orla Baxendale’s family, originally from East Lancashire in England, expressed shock and devastation over her untimely death. Described as an “exquisite ballet, contemporary, and Irish step dancer” in her online obituary, Orla was remembered as the embodiment of enthusiasm, strength, and beauty.
