Buzz is circulating in Hollywood about the exciting prospect of Tom Cruise making a cameo appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s rumored final film, ‘The Movie Critic,’ as reported by journalist Jeff Sneider. Although nothing is set in stone, the renowned star of ‘Jerry Maguire’ is reportedly rearranging his busy schedule to accommodate dates for Tarantino.
While Cruise is engrossed in the filming of ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ for a significant portion of 2024, speculation continues to grow about his involvement in Tarantino’s project.
‘The Movie Critic,’ set in 1970s southern California, will unfold the story of a cynical, funny, and outspoken male film reviewer. Drawing inspiration from a real but relatively unknown figure who wrote movie reviews for an unconventional publication, Tarantino describes him as a second-string critic with a sharp wit.
Tarantino’s regular collaborator, Brad Pitt, is already attached to the project, although details about his role remain undisclosed.
Comparing the lead character to ‘Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle, Tarantino envisions a critic as cynical and humorous as Howard Stern, with a touch of Travis Bickle’s demeanor if he were a film critic. Despite the character’s rude and irreverent nature, Tarantino emphasizes the humor that defines the critic’s writing.
Interestingly, this potential collaboration between Cruise and Tarantino could have happened earlier. The acclaimed director had considered casting Cruise as Cliff Booth in ‘Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood’ (2019), but the stars didn’t align for the partnership. Reflecting on their interaction, Tarantino expressed admiration for Cruise and hinted that a collaboration could materialize in the future.
‘The Movie Critic’ is speculated to be Tarantino’s swan song as a director, aligning with his longstanding plan to retire after helming ten films. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tarantino envisioned the tenth film as the grand culmination of a larger narrative, describing it as the “big show-stopping climax.” He suggested that the 10th movie would serve as a concluding epilogue to his illustrious directorial career.
