In 2023, the spotlight on the Tamil film industry shines even brighter as two films create history and one of them, Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo, is now on the cusp of joining the elite 300 crore club at the Indian box office.
Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, showcases Thalapathy Vijay in a titular role and is the third installment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) following the success of Kaithi and Vikram. Surpassing Vikram’s impressive 426 crore gross worldwide, Leo has emerged as the highest-grossing film within the LCU. Even in India, it left its mark, crossing 255.09 crores in net lifetime earnings, previously held by Kamal Haasan’s movie.
The extended opening week for Leo witnessed strong performance thanks to the unwavering support of the audience and the festive spirit of Navratri/Dussehra. Within the first eight days, the film managed to earn a commendable 283.10 crores in net earnings at the Indian box office. Although there were drops in collections after the extended opening weekend, this is a common trend in front-loaded films.
As Leo enters its second week, it experienced a slight dip with collections falling below 10 crores for the first time. Early trends indicate that the film is concluding its ninth day within the range of 7.50-9 crores, bringing the total net earnings at the Indian box office to approximately 290.60-291.10 crores. With Saturday approaching, a resurgence is anticipated, bringing Leo closer to the prestigious 300 crore club.
Upon achieving this remarkable feat, Leo will set its sights on surpassing Jailer’s lifetime earnings of 345 crores, aiming to become the second highest net grosser in Kollywood after 2.0, which grossed an impressive 408 crores.
Following the blockbuster success of Leo, Thalapathy Vijay has shifted his focus to his next project, tentatively titled ‘Thalapathy 68’, directed by Venkat Prabhu. Recently, the film’s entire cast participated in a pooja ceremony to kick off the shooting process on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadasami, October 24. In celebration of this moment, the makers shared a video from the pooja ceremony, indicating the beginning of a promising new venture.
Apart from Thalapathy Vijay, ‘Thalapathy 68’ will feature notable stars such as Prabhu Deva, Jayaram, Yogi Babu, and others, promising another exciting addition to the Tamil film industry’s success story.
