Randeep Hooda is gearing up to bring the story of India’s unsung hero, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, to the silver screen in the much-anticipated Swatantrya Veer Savarkar biopic.
The actor recently announced that the film is scheduled for release on National Martyrs Day, March 22, in both Hindi and Marathi, marking his directorial debut.
Significance of the Release Date:
Originally intended for a May 28 release last year and later rescheduled for January 26, the biopic faced delays due to a legal dispute between producers Anand Pandit and Legends Studios. The recent resolution of the dispute ensures a release that pays homage to the legendary freedom fighter on an important historical day.
Hooda shared a teaser for the film, hinting at the rewriting of history. The caption reads, “Two heroes of Indian Independence Struggle; one celebrated and one removed from history. On Martyrs Day 2024, history will be rewritten.” The film, featuring Ankita Lokhande and Amit Sial, is a collaborative effort by Zee Studios, Anand Pandit, Randeep Hooda, Sandeep Singh, Yogesh Rahar, Sam Khan, and Panchali Chakraborty.

Exploring Savarkar’s Historical Significance:
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, an Indian independence activist, politician, and writer, played a pivotal role in shaping the Hindu nationalist ideology of Hindutva while imprisoned in Ratnagiri in 1922. The honorific prefix “Veer” highlighted his bravery as he joined the Hindu Mahasabha, propagating the term Hindutva to establish a collective “Hindu” identity. Despite facing charges in Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination in 1948, he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
Randeep Hooda’s dedication to portraying Savarkar is evident in his commitment to the role. Last year, he faced challenges, including significant weight loss of 26kgs in a month, showcasing his dedication to accurately embody the main character.
In his press statement, Hooda asserted his full ownership of the film’s copyrights, emphasizing his role as producer, director, and completion of the project despite adversities.
