Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the romantic thriller takes viewers on a journey from delirious romance to a gripping nightmare through the chance encounter of two strangers.
However, what many may not know is that before Vijay Sethupathi, Saif Ali Khan was initially the preferred choice to star opposite Katrina Kaif in Merry Christmas, as divulged by Sriram Raghavan himself.
In a recent interview, Sriram shared insights into the casting process, mentioning how he and Katrina discussed the film post-Andhadhun. While praising Katrina as a fabulous choice for the female lead, Sriram revealed his initial choice for the male lead: Saif Ali Khan. The director aimed for a unique pairing without any pre-existing baggage, stating, “I had met another actor who had liked the role also, but then I told him sorry, because you have worked with her (Katrina Kaif) before.”
Katrina, curious about the actor’s identity, prodded Sriram, who disclosed that it was Saif Ali Khan. Despite Saif’s interest in the role, Sriram opted for a fresh approach, stating, “I want something fresh, I don’t know what I am looking for.”
The turning point came when Sriram Raghavan watched Vijay Sethupathi’s performance in ’96. Impressed, he met Vijay at a film festival in Melbourne and discussed working together. The unique combination of Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi intrigued the director, who admitted to being unable to envision this pairing before.
The film Merry Christmas hit theatres on January 12, 2024, showcasing the unexpected chemistry between Katrina and Vijay, leaving audiences eager to witness the unconventional narrative unfold on the big screen.
