The ensemble cast of Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious mythological epic, “Ramayana,” continues to expand, with Rakul Preet Singh reportedly in discussions to portray the pivotal character of Shurpanakha. This comes after the confirmed casting of Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.

According to a source revealed to Pinkvilla, Singh has undergone look tests for the role and has been in talks with Tiwari for some time. Shurpanakha’s character holds significant importance in the Ramayana, being the catalyst for the rivalry between Lord Ram and Ravana.

The film is scheduled to commence filming in March 2024. If finalized for the role, this would mark Singh’s first project following her wedding to longtime boyfriend Jackky Bhagnani in February.

Expressing her eagerness for this “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” the source emphasized Singh’s enthusiasm for joining the epic world of Ramayana. The paperwork is expected to be completed soon, solidifying her association with the project.

Looking at the broader cast, Lara Dutta is rumored to play Kaikeyi, Vijay Sethupathi is in talks for Vibhishana, and KGF star Yash might portray the role of the demon king Ravana. Sunny Deol is set to begin shooting in May 2024, while Yash is anticipated to join the project in July 2024. The film’s first part is eyeing a Diwali 2025 release, pending an official announcement.

In response to concerns about the film’s quality and potential controversy, Nitesh Tiwari assured that his vision for Ramayana is respectful and not intended to offend anyone. Drawing a distinction from the controversial Adipurush (2023), Tiwari expressed confidence that the content will be well-received, citing his role as a discerning consumer of the content he creates. Tiwari’s last directorial venture was the film “Bawaal” in 2023.
