Leo Roars to Victory: Thalapathy Vijay’s Magnum Opus Emerges as Tamil Nadu’s Highest Grossing Film

Published on

In a groundbreaking achievement for Thalapathy Vijay, his latest blockbuster “Leo” has secured the coveted title of the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu. This marks the second time that a Vijay film has claimed the top spot, with the first instance dating back to the iconic 2004 release, “Ghilli.”

As “Leo” enters its fourth week, the triumphant run continues at the Tamil Nadu box office, witnessing an impressive collection of Rs. 2.50 crore during this period.

Despite a slight dip on Friday, attributed to the arrival of Diwali releases, the film experienced a surge in collections during the holiday, bringing its cumulative earnings to an astounding Rs. 230 crore within twenty-nine days.

Thalapathy Vijay’s latest outing has now established a remarkable lead of Rs. 8 crore over the previous record holder, “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1.”

This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering Vijay’s influential status as the reigning superstar in the Tamil film industry. Despite his recent dominance, claiming the top-grossing film title had eluded him until “Leo’s” remarkable feat. Previous films like “Bigil” and “Master” came close but fell short of surpassing the record set by “Baahubali 2,” which held the title for five years.

In an unexpected turn of events, “Leo” achieved what seemed like an insurmountable task in just over a year. Three films – “Vikram,” “Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1,” and “Leo” – managed to dethrone the long-standing champion, “Baahubali 2.” A fourth contender, “Jailer,” also surpassed the once unassailable “Baahubali 2.”

The current list of the highest-grossing films in Tamil Nadu stands as follows:

  1. Leo: Rs. 230 crore approx (29 days)
  2. Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1: Rs. 222 crore
  3. Jailer: Rs. 189 crore
  4. Vikram: Rs. 181 crore
  5. Baahubali: The Conclusion: Rs. 146 crore
  6. Varisu: Rs. 144.50 crore
  7. Master: Rs. 142 crore
  8. Bigil: Rs. 141 crore
  9. Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2: Rs. 139 crore
  10. Sarkar: Rs. 131 crore

In a broader context, “Leo” has not only dominated the Tamil Nadu box office but has also grossed an impressive Rs. 417 crore in India and Rs. 615 crore worldwide.
