Before Saif Ali Khan embarked on portraying urban, commitment-phobic characters, he played the antithesis in Nikkhil Advani’s Kal Ho Naa Ho, a film that celebrates its 20th anniversary today. His character, Rohit Patel, held his own against the lead role of Aman, portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan.

Unrequited Love with Strength

Rohit’s character, crafted by Karan Johar, showcases unrequited love in a unique light. Unlike typical heartbreak reactions, Rohit’s response to Naina’s revelation is composed. Accustomed to rejection, he gracefully steps back, giving her the bouquet intended for Aman. His subtle approach and understanding of heartbreak set him apart.

Ek Tarfa Pyaar Ki Taakat

Rohit doesn’t delve into self-pity or turn obsessive. He doesn’t conform to clich├ęs; instead, he channels his unrequited love into nurturing more love. Living a simple life in Manhattan, he yearns for a family. Rohit is the boy you take home to your mother, yet the girl he loves is seeking a dominant father figure.

Strength in Awareness

Rohit’s love is persistent, yet he’s aware of playing second fiddle to Aman. His strength lies in loving deeply despite the reality. Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) acknowledges the strength in Rohit’s love, emphasizing that the awareness of reality doesn’t hinder his deep affection.

A Lasting Love

Rohit shares Naina’s sadness and respects her feelings, even in the face of Aman’s demise. In the end, Naina sees him as a friend, but Rohit sees hope in her. His love, slow and gentle, transcends time, aiming to outlive him even if there’s no tomorrow.

Kal Ho Naa Ho, with Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Rohit, offers a nuanced perspective on unrequited love that remains impactful two decades later.
